Virginia

At Rex, we have matched Virginia’s vision with our own.

At Rex Academy, we are dedicated to building quality computer science education for all ages. Our core belief is that computer science should be available to all learners as it is a gateway to many opportunities.

Learning to code is comparable to learning reading, writing, and math for this generation. Rex makes this process easy and enjoyable for all!

On October 22, 2018, Arizona's State Board of Education voted to adopt new K-12 Computer Science Standards.

In 2017, the Virginia Board of Education adopted mandatory computer science standards for all students. Within these standards were four key fundamentals to be taught:

  • Computer Literacy – students can use computing technology with high efficiency.
  • Educational Technology – students can apply computer literacy to school subjects.
  • Digital Citizenship – students learn to use technology appropriately and responsibly.
  • Information Technology – students learn the industrial applications of computer science.

In addition, Virginia attempts to improve the following areas:

  • Computational thinking.
  • Creating a collaborative and inclusive environment for students.
  • Reducing the equity issues that surround computer science education.

All schools in Virginia must implement the Virginia K – 12  Standards of Learning. However, not every school in Virginia offers computer science yet.

In Virginia, computer science courses may count as a graduation credit towards certain math, laboratory science, or CTE courses. In addition, computer science courses may also count as their foreign language requirement for graduation.
