Rex Tech Talk: What’s real and what’s not?

By Admin

AI has introduced a large amount of fake videos and images into social media. The better AI has become at mimicking reality, the harder it is becoming to tell the difference between real and fake images or videos in our feed.

I recently started noticing a trend of videos exposing or pointing out AI videos that had gone viral. These videos were all presumed to be real.

One of the videos I recently fell for was of a bear jumping on a trampoline. While I have seen some obviously fake versions of this video since, at the time I was introduced to the video in a reel of “funny animal videos.” Stacked in a set of multiple videos, I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary with the video when presented amongst other silly animal videos.

A few days later, I saw a video exposing many viral animal videos that were AI generated. Amongst the list, the bear bouncing on the trampoline video I had seen just a few days prior.

While some of these videos are still obviously fake, knowing what is fact and what is fiction has become more and more important. Things like knowing how much a bear weighs and how much weight a trampoline can hold helps debunk even the best “bear jumping on trampoline” AI videos.

Just yesterday, I saw someone asking President Trump about a viral video of a person throwing a black bag out of a White House window. He pointed out that all the windows were bullet proof and completely sealed, so that must have been an AI generated video.

While knowing facts can help us debunk AI generated videos and images, it does raise concern for equipping our kids to be critical thinkers and media skeptics.

Our children need to understand the dangers of believing everything they see and hear online. Helping students understand the power and tools available to generate AI content can help them gain a better understanding of the power of AI in creating fake media.
