Covid really shocked the education world by forcing education to go remote without any planning or time to prep.
To be honest, it was a mess.
As a certified teacher, I had been participating in remote learning prior to Covid through google classroom and zoom. I had been teaching both private students and small groups for 4 years prior to covid. When Covid hit, we didn’t have time to train the kids, teach the parents, or set up the online resources to effectively teach.
The remote learning that came out of Covid led a lot of families to simply decide that remote learning doesn’t work.
I think we need to change the idea to, “badly prepped remote learning doesn’t work.”
If we are honest though, no badly prepped education is good. This is why teachers spend hours lesson planning, writing scope and sequences, choosing resources, and adapting their teaching.
Remote learning requires the same amount of prep. It also needs good resources to be selected just like in person teaching.
With our remote computer science and AI classes, we have gotten to help students gain skills they were not given through traditional education.
Computer science and AI is innately an online activity, making our remote learning even more effective.
